This article assumes that you understand general rules for setting up locations in your feed, and as such provides just the specifics for each type.

Setting up Countries

Meta is very specific about countries, so when you select a country, you will target a very specific area within the borders:

To prepare countries in the feed you can just write down the exact country names (check on the Hunch interface if not sure), but it is also recommended to mention the type "country".

Examples

France | country
United States | country
United States, US | country (this will work, too)

Netherlands | country

Nederland | country (this will work if your ad account is in Dutch)

Setting up Towns/Cities

Selecting a city always results in selecting a circle around the city centre.

Why is radius important?

  • If there are other cites with their centres falling under the radius, they will also be included in the targeting.

  • The custom radius will enable targeting a more narrow city centre for larger cities.

  • But also, it can allow targeting a wider area around the city.

When you select a city on Meta, you are actually getting a city with a default radius 40km (25 miles).

You can always remove the radius and use just the city by selecting "Current city only". This will result with the most narrow definition of the city in a shape of a circle.

How to set up all this in the feed?

Step 1

First, set up a city name, follow by Country, name a type to be sure.

New York, United States | city

Paris, France | city

Salt Lake City, United States | geo_market

Then, connect this field with your location column:

Step 2

Set up radius. You only need a number in the feed, no unit (it is implied on ads manager depending on your ad account).

If you want to keep the default radius, just leave the feed field empty and the default radius will be applied. The default radius is 40km (25 miles).

You don't even need this column in the feed or to set up radius on ad set, in case all of your ad sets will have the default radius.

If you want to use a custom radius, then you can set it up in a separate feed column and connect it to the second field:

If you want to use "Current city only", then you need to define the radius in your feed as value 0.

Radius Limitations for Cities

The minimal radius you can set for cities is 17km (10 miles), and the maximum is 80km (50 miles).

Example

New York, United States | city^^8000

Setting up Postal codes (ZIPs)

Postal codes are very simple - just name the ZIP and mention the country in the following way:
[ZIP code] || [Country]

Example

1091 || Netherlands

ZIP codes are returning a very specific area:

Setting up Coordinates

A coordinate is a specific point on the map, so targeting a coordinate with no radius makes no sense, you will need both.

If you don't set up a radius, a default radius will be applied. For coordinates, a default radius is 16km (10 miles).

To define a coordinate in the feed you need to write it down as
latitude, longitude

Example

51.37309882309409, 6.196187929516161

If you also want a custom radius, just add it to the end in meters as follows:

Example

51.37309882309409, 6.196187929516161^^8000

If no radius is defined, the default one is applied.

Radius Limitations for Coordinates

The minimal radius you can set for coordinates is 1km (1 mile), and the maximum is 80km (50 miles). The default is 16km (10 miles).

You can set up radius as an addition to the coordinates (^^8000) or as a separate column, the result is the same.

If you have multiple locations on one ad set, it is recommended to use the first way (^^8000). This way you can pair each coordinate with the appropriate radius more easily.
