Template collections in Hunch Light

Limits, artboards, syncing, product sets, and how template collections appear in Meta.

Written by Igor Simovic

A template collection is how your Hunch templates reach Meta. Each collection takes the products from your Hunch catalog, applies your image templates (and video templates, if you have CPV) to them, and syncs the result to Meta, either as a new catalog or into an existing Meta catalog you've claimed. You then use that catalog in your campaigns and add ads to it with Connect Ads.

In Hunch Light, template collections are available for Meta only.

Before you start

Requirement

Why it's needed

Where to set it up

Your team is on the Template Collections plan

Creating a collection, and adding templates to one, is part of Template Collections.

Your team is authorised with Meta, with a business and ad account connected

The collection is created as a catalog in your Meta business.

Your Hunch catalog has the business connected

The collection is created in the business connected to the Hunch catalog it belongs to.

You don't need a plan to build templates. Anyone can create and edit image and video templates, and the plan only applies once you put them in a collection.

What a collection can hold

Limit

Image templates

Up to 6 per collection

Video templates

Up to 6 per collection, with the CPV add-on

Artboards per template

Up to 3: Square, Portrait and Story

A Hunch catalog can have any number of template collections. If the Hunch catalog was claimed, only one of its collections can be assigned to the claimed Meta catalog.

A collection belongs to the Hunch catalog it was created in. It only uses that catalog's products, and it's only offered in Connect Ads when you open Connect Ads from that catalog.

Artboards

Artboard

Size

Where Meta uses it

Square

1080 × 1080

Feeds and other square placements

Portrait

1080 × 1350

Facebook and Instagram feeds

Story

1080 × 1920

Stories and Reels

Give every template all three artboards. When an artboard is missing, Meta fills the gap with automatic cropping, which can zoom in on your products. For Story artboards, keep prices, logos and other key elements away from the top and bottom edges, where Meta places its own interface.

How a collection appears in Meta

  • A new catalog, or one you've claimed. By default, each collection is created as a new catalog in the business connected to your Hunch catalog. In Commerce Manager, it carries the name you gave the collection, and renaming the collection in Hunch renames the catalog in Meta too. If your Hunch catalog was claimed from an existing Meta catalog, you can assign the collection to that catalog instead, which keeps its history and your existing campaigns. Only one collection can be assigned to a claimed catalog. This is the recommended setup. See Claiming an existing Meta catalog.

  • Catalog sales campaigns are tied to it. When a campaign has a catalog set at campaign level, it must be this collection's catalog to take Hunch ads. Campaigns with other objectives, or without a catalog at campaign level, can take Hunch ads too.

  • Product sets come from Hunch. See Product sets below.

  • Pixel and events. Every pixel and event source you connect in Destination Details is connected to the collection's catalog automatically, so you don't need to set this up in Commerce Manager.

Create a template collection

  1. Open the Hunch catalog you want to advertise.

  2. Go to Template collections and select + Create.

  3. Name the collection. This is the name you'll see in Commerce Manager, so make it easy to recognise when picking a catalog for a campaign.

  4. Add up to 6 image templates and, with CPV, up to 6 video templates.

  5. Select Create template collection.

There's no draft stage. As soon as you create a collection, it's published and starts syncing to Meta. If your Hunch catalog is claimed: the first time you publish a template, and at least one template collection exists, a pop-up appears that lets you assign the published template to your output.

Adding, editing and removing templates

  • Adding a template to a collection makes it available in Connect Ads once the next sync finishes.

  • Editing a template updates it everywhere it's used. Every ad using it shows the new design after the full catalog sync described below. The ads themselves aren't edited.

  • Removing a template from a collection, or deleting it, is only possible when none of the ads using it are delivering. Pause those ads first.

Each ad uses one image template (and one video template, with CPV) from the collection. To test templates against each other, create one ad per template in the same ad set.

How syncing works

Collections sync to Meta in two stages:

  1. Your Hunch catalog syncs. Hunch collects the latest product data from your source feed.

  2. Templates are prepared and the collection syncs. Hunch applies your templates to the updated products and sends the result to Meta.

How much is sent depends on what changed:

What changed

What syncs

Product data (price, availability, new or removed items)

Update mode: only the changed items are sent.

A template in the collection was edited

Full update: every item in the collection is updated, because every image changes.

Syncing runs on the schedule you set: hourly, daily or weekly. You can change the schedule in your catalog's Settings. You can also run a manual sync whenever you need one.

After a full update, Meta needs time to fetch all the new images and videos, so ads can show the previous design for a while. With large catalogs, avoid editing templates just before or during important sales periods, and make template changes early enough for Meta to catch up.

With CPV, Hunch creates each video when it's needed, not for the whole catalog upfront. See Video ads with CPV.

Product sets

Product sets are published to Meta from Hunch.

  • Any change you make to a product set in Hunch updates the set in Meta.

  • Any change made to that set directly in Meta is overwritten by Hunch.

Manage your product sets in Hunch only. Product sets created directly in Meta on the collection's catalog are left alone, but you can't reach them from Hunch. When you claim a catalog, its eligible product sets are brought into Hunch, and from then on Hunch keeps them updated the same way: changes made to them in Meta are overwritten. Product sets created in Meta after the claim aren't brought into Hunch. To add a new set, create it in Hunch. For more on creating product sets, see Product sets and Smart sets.

Deleting a template collection

You can delete a collection once none of its templates are used in a delivering ad. Pause those ads first.

When you delete a collection:

  • Nothing is deleted in Meta. The catalog and your ads stay as they are.

  • Hunch stops syncing it, so product data and creative in Meta stop updating.

  • It can't be attached to ads again. Ads created with it stay in Meta, but can no longer be edited in Connect Ads.

If your collection created its own catalog, a new collection means a new catalog. The same applies to claimed catalogs: once you delete the collection assigned to a claimed catalog, a new collection can't be assigned to it. Hunch also stops syncing the claimed catalog, so replace its data source in Meta to keep it up to date. See Claiming an existing Meta catalog.

Catalog sales campaigns can't switch catalogs, because Meta sets their catalog at campaign level. To keep using Hunch templates in a catalog sales campaign after deleting a collection, create a new collection and a new campaign that uses its catalog.

If your plan changes

If you switch from Template Collections to Enriched Feeds or cancel, your collections stop syncing at the end of your billing period. If a payment fails, they stop once payment retries run out. They aren't deleted in Hunch or Meta, and your ads stay in Meta, but product data such as prices and availability is no longer updated and can go out of date. Paused collections can't be edited, but you can still delete them.

If CPV ends but you stay on Template Collections, your collections keep syncing without their videos. See Video ads with CPV.

Troubleshooting

What you see

What to do

I can't create a collection

Check that your team is on the Template Collections plan and that the requirements in Before you start are met.

I can't add a video template

Video templates need the CPV add-on.

I can't add another template

The collection already has 6 image or 6 video templates. Remove one, or create another collection.

I can't delete a template or collection

It's used in an ad that's still delivering. Pause the ads using it, then try again.

My collection isn't in Commerce Manager

It appears in the business connected to your Hunch catalog, under the collection's name. If you created it just now, wait for the first sync to finish.

My template changes aren't showing in ads

A template edit triggers a full update. Wait for the sync to finish and for Meta to fetch the new images, then check with Show ad in Connect Ads.

A product set I edited in Meta changed back

Product sets are managed in Hunch, and Hunch overwrites changes made in Meta. Make the change in Hunch.

My collection is paused

Your plan no longer covers it. See Why is syncing paused?.

Common questions

Can I use one collection for several campaigns? Yes. You can add Hunch ads to any catalog sales campaign that uses the collection's catalog, and to campaigns with other objectives or without a catalog set at campaign level.

Can I mix image and video templates in one ad? Yes, with CPV. Connect Ads puts the image and video template you choose into a single ad.

Can I use a template collection on Snapchat or TikTok? No. Template collections are available for Meta only. For Snapchat, TikTok, Pinterest and Reddit, use enriched feeds, which apply one template across your whole catalog. If you're interested in other advanced features, email us at [email protected] to hear more about what Hunch can do.

Does editing a template change my ads in Meta? The ads aren't edited, but they show the new design once the collection has synced, because they read their creative from the catalog. Since the ad itself doesn't change, updating a template doesn't send it back into the learning phase, so you keep the full benefit of Meta's delivery optimisation.
